Cited by the Gemological Institute of America, only one out of 10,000 carats of fashioned diamonds display fancy color. That number comes to a smaller fraction of one in 25,000 carats for diamonds inheriting intense color. Founded by the same institute, a colored diamond grading system was created to accommodate and admire the different depths of color each stone naturally possesses. The differentiation of color intensity is graded using the terms: Faint, Very Light, Light, Fancy Light, Fancy, Fancy Intense, Fancy Deep, and Fancy Vivid.

Colored diamonds are prized by their bevy of rare colors, from auctions of Christie’s to the oldest houses of master jewelers. Its scarcity as a natural specimen gifted by nature allows it to command heavy price tags, breaking the million-dollar mark for diamonds showcasing an exceptional body of color supported by considerable carat weight. The high demand for colored diamonds has influenced the appreciation of prices from up to 1 to 2% per quarter.
