Natural Green Diamonds – A rare commodity in a diverse jewelry culture?

20.04.2023 | Natural Green Diamonds | Diamonds

Green diamonds are among the rarest colored diamonds in the world. Their color evokes a sense of growth and vitality. The true brilliance and scintillation that only a diamond can possess are simply mesmerizing when paired with such an exceptional hue. Fancy vivid green diamonds rival the finest blue and pink diamonds, and when paired with their scarcity, it’s no wonder there has been a surge in their value in recent years. In reality, all colored diamonds only represent a mere 0.01% of the world’s diamond yield. Green diamonds make up just a fraction of that percentage.

COLORED DIAMONDS 0.01% OF THE WORLD'S DIAMOND YIELD

When Jennifer Lopez’s engagement and wedding to Ben Affleck recently hit the headlines, a green diamond was splashed all over the tabloid pages worldwide. The flashy stone took the world by storm, showcasing green diamonds in the public domain.

ORIGINS - SCARCITY & TREATMENT

The most beautiful green diamonds hail from Brazil, South Africa, Venezuela, and Guyana. The green is caused by a displacement of carbon atoms in the structure of the diamond crystal at the time of its conception, millions of years prior to its mining and discovery. The color and structure of the diamond are considered stable, and the color is permanent. The color, however, can be only surface-deep, depending on the type of diamond. The rarest of green diamonds have a cohesive green body color which will not be affected by the fashioning of the diamond crystal into a cut gem.

Due to their scarcity and the genuine possibility of treatment, green diamonds are typically regarded with suspicion and examined carefully in gemological laboratories before heading into the diamond market. Beyond that, green diamonds, like all other colored diamonds, can be graded using the current GIA Colored Diamond Grading standard to describe their color. The grades are as follows: Faint, Very Light, Light, Fancy Light, Fancy, Fancy Dark, Fancy Intense, Fancy Deep, and Fancy Vivid. The majority of colored diamonds fall into the Faint to Fancy range. Dehres is proud to offer Fancy and Fancy Intense Green diamonds among our collection.

FANCY VIVID GREEN DIAMONDS ARE THE MOST RARE

Delving further into the color range, green, blue, and pink diamonds in the Fancy Intense grade command prices in the hundreds of thousands per carat. While they are highly valuable, the highest of accolades is bestowed upon the Fancy Vivid grade.

This is where the key defining factor between these three colors comes into play. The Fancy Vivid green diamond is the rarest of the three, and its rarity increases its desirability. With so few Fancy Vivid green diamonds in circulation, they command prices well into the millions per carat, reserving them for the most astute collectors and connoisseurs who would like to diversify their collections.

Such is the case with the largest Fancy Vivid green that has been publicly recorded. The Aurora green diamond was a stunning 5.03ct, Cut-Cornered Rectangular Modified Brilliant Cut with VS2 clarity. It was set into a ring and sold for 16.8 million by Christie’s in Hong Kong back in 2016. The per carat price of this diamond is 3,330,000, and it is currently the most valuable Fancy Vivid green diamond on record. The record was previously held by a 2.54 carat Fancy Vivid Green VS1 diamond that was sold by Sotheby’s back in 2009 for approximately $1.22 million per carat, after the financial meltdown when diamond prices were low.

In comparison, last year, we had, among our extensive range of rare gems and diamonds, a 1.10ct cushion cut Fancy Vivid green diamond, which sold for 1.3 million per carat.

GREEN DIAMOND TREND

So, is the green diamond worthy of owning? The above anecdotes indicate that, yes, that is indeed the case. Mr. Zion believes, “If present trends continue, I definitely anticipate the price of green diamonds to remain strong and potentially increase. It’s extremely hard to find a nice vivid green.”

Fancy Vivid diamonds are currently so rare that Dehres doesn’t have one available in our extensive collection, though the hunt is on to source another magnificent piece of gemological mastery.
